Aim
To enable candidates to summon help and give adequate and efficient Emergency Aid to a casualty at the workplace following an injury or illness using material to hand and HSE approved first aid equipment.

Who should attend
Any individuals who have been nominated as Appointed persons at their workplace or wish to gain knowledge of emergency procedures & a recognised qualification in First Aid.

Benefits
First Aid equipment and first aid trained personnel at the workplace are requirements of Health & Safety law. In emergencies, First Aiders can act to prevent situations becoming major issues and can limit potential sick leave through prompt action.

Syllabus

  • Introduction, registration welcome & domestics
  • Subject gathering for final session
  • The task of the First Aider and priorities of First Aid practice
  • What is first aid? What to do at the scene of an emergency
  • Assessment of a casualty Checking Response, Opening the airway Checking Breathing and Signs of Circulation
  • Recovery position
  • Rescue Breathing and CPR techniques
  • Examination of an unconscious casualty
  • Assessment and treatment of choking casualties
  • Treatment and control of slight and severe external and internal bleeding
  • Assessment and treatment of Shock
  • Duties of an Appointed person
  • Communication, Contents of a first aid box
  • Subjects gathered from first session
  • Revision
Teaching strategies and methods
The course combines tutorials & demonstrations with student centered methods such as groupwork, case studies, question & answer sessions, skill demonstrations & practice.

Award
A certificate of competence will be awarded upon successful completion of the course. This will be valid for three years.
