Aim
To enable candidates to give adequate and efficient first aid to a casualty at the workplace following an injury or illness using material to hand and Health & Safety Executive (HSE) approved first aid equipment.
Who should attend
All organisations must comply with Health & Safety (First Aid) regulations 1981. If a risk assessment identifies that First Aiders are needed, this HSE approved course is essential.
Benefits
First Aid equipment and first aid trained personnel at the workplace are requirements of Health & Safety law. In emergencies, First Aiders can act to prevent situations becoming major issues and can limit potential sick leave through prompt action.
DAY 1
- Introduction to First Aid
- The principles of First Aid, Duties of First Aider
- Assessment of Casualty
- Recovery Position, Rescue Breathing and CPR
- How we Breathe
- Asphyxia, Choking and Asthma
- Heart Attack and Shock
- Electrical Injuries
- Introduction of Causes of Unconciousness
DAY 2
- The circulatory system
- Blood and blood loss
- Dressings and bandages (The use of)
- Control of bleeding, minor and major
- Internal bleeding
- Bleeding from special sites
- Causes of Unconciousness Continued, Fainting, Epilepsy, Diabetes, Stroke, Head Injury
- Transport of a casualty as required by circumstances of the Workplace
- Practical Sessions/Revision
DAY 3
- HSE Regulations & contents of a typical first aid at work kit
- Injury to Bones, Muscles and Joints, Dislocation
- Spinal Injury
- Burns & Scalds
- Recognition & Treatment of Poisoning
- Eye injuries
- Practical Skills/Revision
DAY 4
- What to do at an emergency
- How to deal with major incidents
- Revision of underpinning knowledge & practical skills
- FINAL ASSESSMENT
Teaching strategies & methods
The course combines tutorials & demonstrations with student centered methods such as groupwork, case studies, question & answer sessions, skill demonstrations & practice. Assessment will be ongoing throughout the course by the trainer and there is a final summative assessment on the last day with independent assessors.
