Aim
To give candidates he knowledge and skills to administer Oxygen Therapy in a safe, prompt and effective way.

Objectives
By the end of the training course candidates will be able to: Know the safety procedures for the use of oxygen equipment Appreciate the anatomy and physiology of respiration. Apply updated Artificial Resuscitation skills. Safely administer oxygen therapy. Use oxygen therapy equipment as an adjunct to resuscitation

Benefits
A casualty who has breathing difficulties or who has gone into Respiratory Arrest, will have a greater chance of recovery having received Oxygen administered by a qualified person. Any company or organization that works in a high risk environment involving confined spaces should have their staff trained in Oxygen Administration

Syllabus

  • Course introduction
  • Update or refreshment of basic life support
  • Anatomy and physiology of breathing
  • Nature & purpose of oxygen
  • Storage (conditions, cylinders)
  • Safety of cylinders and users (signage, explosion)
  • Use of oxygen
  • Causes & recognition of hypoxia
  • Special conditions (lung disease, Infants and babies.
  • Administration of Oxygen
  • When to use (medical conditions where use is indicated)
  • When not to use (doctors authority, recognition of over-oxygenation)
  • Records
  • Pulse, Breathing rate, time.
  • Practical demonstration and student practice administering oxygen
Teaching strategies & methods
The course combines tutorials & demonstrations with student centred methods such as groupwork, case studies, question & answer sessions, skill demonstrations & practice.
